Band-Aid is brand name for Johnson & Johnson's line of adhesive bandages and related products. It has also become something of genericized trademark for any adhesive bandage in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India and United States.

"Band-aid" has also entered usage as a term for any temporary fix. (e.g. "Band-aid solutions were used to fix the leak.")

The Band-Aid was invented in 1920 by Earle Dickson, an employee of Johnson & Johnson, for his wife Josephine Dickson, who frequently cut and burned herself while cooking. The prototype product allowed his wife to dress her wounds without assistance. Dickson, a Highland Park, New Jersey, resident at the time, passed the idea on to his employer who then went on to produce and market the product as the Band-Aid. Dickson had a successful career at Johnson & Johnson, eventually becoming a Vice President at the company before his retirement in 1957.

The first bandages produced were hand-made and not very popular. By 1924, Johnson & Johnson introduced the first machine that produced sterilized Band-Aids. In World War II, millions of Band-Aid bandages were shipped overseas, most of which went to the medical team. Other bandages were shipped to hospitals for people in urgent care.

In 1951, the first decorative Band-Aids were introduced to the market. They continue to be a commercial success today with decorative themes such as Superman, Spider-Man, SpongeBob SquarePants, Rocket Power, Rugrats, smiley faces, Barbie, Dora the Explorer, and Batman.

Johnson & Johnson makes a variety of different products under the Band-Aid brand. These include Band-Aid liquid bandages and Scar Healing bandages. Their newest products include Active Flex bandages, which come in a variety of shapes, forming a fluid-filled barrier to help wounds heal faster. They also include waterproof Tough Strips, which have a strong adhesive, allowing for longer wear. In addition to wound treatment bandages, the company produces Burn-Aid, a burn gel which is applied as a prepackaged bandage. In order to protect the name as a registered trademark, the product is always referred to as "Band-Aid brand" and not just Band-Aid.

Manufacturing facilities are located in Brazil and China.

When is it appropriate to wear a band aid to cover a blemish?
Q. I shaved over a pimple on my chin and it looks quite gross. It might get infected. I'm wearing a small band aid over it. Is this better than leaving it open?
Asked by Jeremy - Mon Apr 21 16:17:17 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. only wear it for a short time, and take it off regularly to get air to it. otherwise it wont heal as quickly. try not to wear the band aid though!

How long should I keep the band aid on?
Q. I went to the doctor's today and got 2 very smal skin tags on my neck frozen with nitrous oxide. She put 2 band aids, how long should i keep them on? And when i took them off to apply medicine, the skin got much darker around it, is this normal? How long will they take to fall off?

A. Let the band aid remain as long as it can. Apply ointment/medicine over it if necessary. There is no time limit. Darkness appearance in the skin is normal. It will go away over a period of time. It may take 2 to 3 days.

Do they make a certain kind of band-aid for a toe?
Q. I got cut by glass and it sliced a little bit of the skin off my little toe. A little bit of skin, but deep. I've already been to the ER, which they gave me stitches for another cut from the glass, but did nothing about covering the little toe, except putting Neosporin on it. I just want to wear a band-aid over it while I sleep so I don't hurt it more in my sleep, but a regular band-aid won't really work too well.

A. They do make fingertip bandages and knuckle bandages, either of which may work but both of which may be hard to find. Ask the pharmacy tech for help if you don't see them. They're shaped like an H, but you fold the bar of the over the tip or your toe, then wrap the "upright" strokes around the toe, overlapping them. The best are flexible fabric bandages, not plastic or vinyl. Later, when it is not so raw. leave it open to air at night to let it dry out. Liquid bandage may work well for you, too.
