How did the economy help start the American civil war?
Q. How did the economy (before the war) help cause the American civil war?

A. With Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin in 1793, cotton became very profitable. This machine was able to reduce the time it took to separate seeds from the cotton. However, at the same time the increase in the number of plantations willing to move from other crops to cotton meant the greater need for a large amount of cheap labor, i.e. slaves. Thus, the southern economy became a one crop economy, depending on cotton and therefore on slavery. On the other hand, the northern economy was based more on industry than agriculture. In fact, the northern industries were purchasing the raw cotton and turning it into finished goods. This disparity between the two set up a major difference in economic attitudes. The South was based on the… [cont.]

How do illegal Mexicans and their supporters feel about the coming second American Civil War they will cause?
Q. When Obama forces Amnesty on the American people against their will and sparks the second Civil war, how will the illegal Mexicans and their supporters feel? What will the illegal Mexicans and their supporters do as ANGRY American eyes from BOTH sides of the war GLARE at them, for being the cause of American soldiers spilling the blood of fellow American soldiers? What will they do as Americans from BOTH sides blame illegal Mexicans, and their supporters, for breaking up and dividing our country? What will they do after igniting a race war on top of a political war?

Q. what were some obituaries, social scenes, enlistments, and other news from New Hampshire during the American Civil War in July of 1862? give me the site of where you found it from, please.

A. There are some sites like www.ancestry.com that have actual copies of New Hampshire newspapers from 1862 online, but all of them require a paid subscription, as far as I know. Sometimes libraries have them available for free on the library computers. However, here's a way to search for stories about New Hampshire that were published in the New-York Times in July of 1862, that should have some examples of what you're looking for: It's a long URL, but it should take you directly to stories published in that month, that mention New Hampshire. (edited to add:) I just looked at my post, and it cut the URL short so it may not take you right there. Bummer. When you get to the page, you may need to change the dates in the boxes to July 1,… [cont.]

Q. What led to the start of the American Civil War?
Asked by Reagan T - Sun Apr 1 21:29:39 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It was really a difference in ideologies which stemmed from the founding of the different regions (hear me out, five on APUSH and I loved the class to death). The South was founded mostly by second-sons who wanted money. They were also Anglicans (very similar to Catholicism). The North was founded by Puritans looking for religious freedom. Naturally, the South was always closer to England...also, they were agriculturists, whereas the North was more industrial. They were really separate countries to begin with. The issue of slavery was one small issue. The South had always supported states' rights over the central government's (antifederalism). Really, the issue was the central government's right to rule on the issue of slavery. At… [cont.]

A. VERY bad. There was zero knowledge of infections, when a soldier was wounded he was brought to a table and treated, then they splashed water to get (most of) the blood off from the table and bring another soldier. Infection kill rate was at least 50% if I remember correctly. You were more likely to die in the hospital than on the actual battlefield. They would set up temporary hospitals as well, anything from houses to simple tents. There often weren't hospital buildings so they had to make do with what they could.

slavery and keeping christanity during the freeing of slave in american civil war?
Q. i am an amauter historian. this question may sound racist but i dont mean its my way of trying to understand this enigma. Right slaves were freeded durring the american civil war, why did they decide to keep their master religion christianity instead going back to say african religions. why would u keep the religion that enslaved u.
Asked by Tempus Erus - Wed May 5 13:24:42 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A big part of this is how many generations ago was the family in Africa. Look at the Dominican Republic, where the slaves freed themselves violently in the 1700s. It makes a contrast with the US where importation of slaves stopped, and most slaves freed by and after the Civil War were descendants, not shipped themselves from Africa. Also look at the tenets of Christianity. As with several other religions, it says that suffering in this life is irrelevant, and the reward is in the next, eternal life.

A. try www.loc.gov It's the Library of Congress, and they have everything about everything there. Photos, maps, oral histories, original documents. Once you get there, you'll have to search around for what you specifically want, but it's pretty easy to navigate. The only problem is, it leads you from one interesting thing to another and, if you're not careful, you can get caught up in all the research and spend all day there.

A. The Union won a victory of attrition. They had more money more men and more resources than the Southern Army had. The longer the war went on the it was for the Union. the South just ran out of money and supplies to fight the war. The Union also developed good experienced officers that were willing to fight the Type of war that was necessary to win the war. Sherman brought the idea of total war, by destroying the civilians supporting the Confederacy, Sherman was able to Economically and emotionally destroy Georgia. When the civilians became aware of what the Union was going to do to end the war, they lost that desire to fight. Not only Generals began to understand how to fight this war, other officers in the Union Army understood… [cont.]

Asked by Ali - Tue Jun 9 20:14:21 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The rally point was the issue of slavery. This was really a mote issue as the slavery concept was (very) slowly dying out and except for the far South, most people did not believe in the concept. The Government (North) rallied around the slave issue, because what they where more worried about was the right to, or possible long term reaction if States where allow to break away from the Union. There was no way people were going to war for the right to seperate from the Union or not. Therefore all the papers and speakers pushed the slave issue. BTW the slave issue was a good and worthwhile fight, to stop the slavery. However as I said, it was on a slow downhill coast and not the real reason for the war.

What do other countries think of the American Civil War?
Q. Do they generally side with the Union or the Confederates, or is it not really one sided? My question has nothing to do with slavery, and I KNOW the American Civil War did not start, nor did it completely revolve around slavery. I am asking how the rest of the world viewed this war - what countries sided with the south or the north, for what reasons, etc.
Asked by Jackal - Mon Sep 14 19:28:16 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. At the time the UK, France and Prussia were sympathetic towards the Confederates as they wanted a weaker US. The Confederates did attempt to blackmail Britain and France's entry into the war with cotton exports as leverage, but this backfired as it made the two begin investing in plantations in their colonies, which further reduced the likely hood of intervention. Russia, who at the time still controlled Alaska, was completely supportive of the Union, to such an extent that they declared they would join the war on the Union's side in the event of Anglo-French intervention. Other minor nations generally remained neutral, although the King of Siam (Thailand) did offer Lincoln a group of fully trained war elephants and handlers, which was… [cont.]

Why the South really won the American Civil War?
Q. I'm writing a research paper that argues the south was the true winner of the American Civil War. Mainly my arugment is that although the North won technically and the South surrendered, the South still succeeded in keeping blacks in a position of slavery. But the paper is supposed to be about 7 pages and I'm having a problem finding anymore justification or evidence. Does anyone have any other ideas on why you can argue that the South won?
Asked by mjy_91 - Wed Nov 11 18:39:21 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Civil War was not just about slavery. In fact the main thing that the South was fighting for was the sovereignty of states. The war brought that to the forefront of American Politics. Even though the South lost the war the issue has been and is still a matter of discussion in every federal bill that passes which might infringe on states rights. After the war the United States was much more mindful of issues that involved states rights as opposed to Federal controls. I am sure that if you do a little research on the subject you will find ample opportunities to add to your paper. Type States Rights in Google and you will be surprised what pops up. As far as the slavery issue is concerned here is an interesting site to go to. Some… [cont.]

Would you be willing to fight in a new American civil war?
Q. Sometimes you feel like "reconstruction" after the Civil War was never completed. Leaving much of The South in a black hole of progress. If the chips were down, would you be willing to fight and kill conservative Americans who have been holding back progress in the country constantly? Ironically, these are the people who stockpile guns and ammo, but they are xenophobic, racist, and don't seem to believe in science. So here's the question, I know people disagree heatedly on issues and just end up going nowhere. Would you be willing to fight in a civil war to impose your will on these people?
Asked by NCC1701 - Wed Oct 7 07:57:34 2009 - - 13 Answers - 1 Comments

A. First of all, the south is most defenitely NOT a black hole of progress. You have large cities with alot of money and power down there (Dallas and Atlanta to name a few). Alot of the country's state ports are in the Gulf of Mexico, where goods from all over the world come into our country. You also forget about a little thing called oil, which runs our economy. Guess where it's drilled? Yep, again, in the Gulf of Mexico. Add to this the fact that most of the larger US military installations that carry our major weapons systems are located in the South. Is it becomming clear that the North really doesn't have a chance? Second of all, you are stereotyping the south as white supremists. You are showing just how narrowminded and foolish… [cont.]
